What Is a Virtual Hiring Event?
A virtual hiring event is an online job fair that allows candidates to connect with hiring teams remotely. Like an in-person open house, anyone qualified for the roles being featured is invited to attend. The main difference is that instead of waiting in a crowded room for your chance to get in front of a recruiter, you wait in an online queue.
Virtual hiring events can be just as meaningful as meeting in person. With a little preparation, you can make a great impression and show us who you are and why you'd be a great addition to the team.
Here are a few simple tips to help you feel confident and prepared for your next virtual interview or career event.
Choose your device (It’s OK to use your smartphone)
You don’t need a computer to have a successful virtual interview. If your phone is your only option, prop it up somewhere stable rather than holding it or walking around, as movement can be distracting and make it difficult for your interviewer to focus on your conversation. Position your phone at approximately eye level and make sure the camera is facing you directly.
Find an appropriate setting
Find a location where you can focus without distractions. A quiet room is ideal, but we understand that isn’t always possible. If you’re at work, sitting in your car or an unused space is suitable. If you’re interviewing from home, let the people around you know when your interview is happening so you can minimize interruptions.
Choose a space with plenty of natural or artificial light in front of you, rather than behind you. Good lighting helps your interviewer see you clearly and creates a more professional appearance on camera.
Test your internet connection ahead of time
A strong internet connection can make a big difference during a virtual interview. If you're using a phone and notice your Wi-Fi is spotty beforehand, try toggling it off to see if cellular data works better, or vice versa. Phones often switch automatically between networks when one is struggling, which can disrupt video calls. It's best to turn off the weaker signal so your phone isn't hopping between them and causing lag.
Prepare your technology
Before your interview:
- Make sure your device is fully charged or plugged in
- Test your microphone and speakers
- Close unnecessary applications and browser tabs
- Turn on the “Do Not Disturb” feature to silence texts, calls and other notifications
- Know how to access the interview platform before your scheduled time
If you’re around others, headphones with a built-in microphone can help drown out background noise, make it easier for you to hear the interviewer and keep your conversation private from those nearby.
Turn your camera on
Even when it’s optional, we encourage you to turn your camera on if you are able. Seeing one another builds a more personal connection and helps the conversation feel more like an in-person interview.
Dress for the interview
Choose professional, interview-appropriate clothing and make sure you feel comfortable and confident. Even though you may be interviewing from home, you're still meeting with a potential employer. If you're a healthcare worker interviewing for a clinical role, wearing scrubs is perfectly acceptable.
Prepare for the conversation
Be ready to talk about your experience, skills, accomplishments, and interest in the position. Review the job description ahead of time and think about examples that show how your background makes you a good fit for the role. Most importantly, be yourself.

Give yourself a few extra minutes
Don't wait until the exact start time to log in. Join your hiring event a few minutes early so you have time to troubleshoot if needed, take a breath and feel ready before the conversation begins.
